Sixth grade students in Donna Hall’s English Language Arts class at Polk County Middle School recently read Ice Story: Shackleton’s Lost Expedition, then visited the school media center for a related enrichment activity.
After finishing the book by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel, students compared the nutritional value and variety of their own meals to those eaten by the early Antarctic explorers. Each team then shared foods they would ideally take on an expedition to a freezing-cold climate.
Students and media coordinator Laura Smith discussed weight, perishable items, nutrition and variety. Afterwards, Smith shared books in the media center that dealt with survival, incredible feats and other related topics.
