BIG grant provides Rubik’s Cubes to aid elementary math, mosaics study

A BIG grant from Tryon Fine Arts Center helped Polk County elementary school students explore mosaics and math with the use of Rubik’s Cubes.

Students in grades first through fifth grade at Polk Central Elementary, Sunny View Elementary and Tryon Elementary were able to create pictures using the Rubik’s Cubes while investigating shape, area, perimeter, volume and other concepts associated with each grade level’s math standards.

The BIG grant allowed Polk County Schools’ Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) department to borrow 650 cubes from the You CAN do the Rubik’s Cube program.

All fifth graders at Tryon Elementary designed a large-scale mosaic, and each student was able to solve at least one cube for the project. The fifth graders created this as part of their class motto and message to younger students.

With each boxed set returned solved, schools were entered into a drawing and Polk County won a set of 50 cubes for students to use next year.

All of the students that participated wanted to offer thanks to the Tryon Fine Arts Center and their donors for the BIG grant that enabled this fun experience combining art, math, tenacity and imagination.
