Cooperative Extension helping Polk Central students grow ‘fast plants’

In collaboration with Helen Blackwell from Polk County Cooperative Extension, third grade students at Polk Central Elementary are getting a hands-on opportunity to study plants

In collaboration with Helen Blackwell from Polk County Cooperative Extension, third grade students at Polk Central Elementary are getting a hands-on opportunity to study plants.

Blackwell brought the program “Fast Plants” to the students this week. Students began their work by planting seeds and watering them, then placed them under a florescent light to speed their growth.

Students will periodically check and record each plant’s growth and water their plant.

Before the Christmas holiday, students will use freeze-dried bees to pollinate the flowers that will have sprouted on their plants. Upon return from Christmas break, students will have seed pods that they can use to continue the plant lifecycle.
