Polk County Early College students have been working with the North Carolina Arboretum since 2022 to study the bird population in Polk County.

Taking part in Project Explore, PCEC students complete weekly bird surveys on campus, then submit that data to an international organization called eBird.

The hard work throughout the school year recently brought a welcome reward as students attended the Mountain Science Expo at the Arboretum.

Students enjoyed a birdwatching hike and a tour of the gardens, visited information booths sponsored by the Arboretum’s science and nature-based partners, and got a first-hand look at the nature of the region.
