Polk Central second graders visit county government, businesses

Second grade students from Polk Central Elementary visited the town of Columbus last week as part of their Communities and Government unit

Second grade students from Polk Central Elementary visited the town of Columbus last week as part of their Communities and Government unit.

All 52 second graders visited the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Polk County Courthouse, State Employees Credit Union and Food Lion as well as Harmon Field in Tryon.

The students are learning about government services and their value to the community. They have also been learning about how governments establish order, provide security and create laws.

Upon returning to the school, the teachers had the students write about their field trip and several students shared their favorite parts. Madison Baldwin said,

“My favorite part was playing at Harmon Field and eating the cake we decorated at Food Lion,” said Madison Baldwin.

“My favorite part of the day was going to Food Lion and decorating a cake,” Shane Jaskowiak said.

When asked about her favorite part, Natalie Dill said, “My favorite part was going to the courthouse and seeing Mrs. Richardson pretending to be a judge.”
