Polk County Early College held a formal induction ceremony on April 6 for the members of their charter Key Club.
Key Club members were joined by Kiwanis Club of Tryon President Linda Greensfelder and club members Stan Gibson and Cam Lawrence, who is also serving as the club’s sponsor.
Polk County Early College students have always been active and volunteering in the local community, but wanted to formalize those opportunities through the Kiwanis Club of Tryon. Kiwanis is “a volunteer organization dedicated to transforming our community and our world, one child and one family at a time.”
The Tryon Kiwanis graciously offered to sponsor PCEC students to start a chapter of Key Club, which is the facet of Kiwanis that operates at the high school level. Polk County High School already has an active Key Club; therefore, it is a welcome addition to Polk County Early College.
Throughout the year, PCEC Key Club members have volunteered more than 800 hours of local service. Some community events the volunteers have staffed include the Foothills Humane Society Yard Sale, the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, Tryon Fine Arts Center events, Walk of Remembrance, the Sunny View Fall Festival, Polk County Toy Run, the PCEC clothing drive, Meals on Wheels and Super Saturday.
Students also staff a free after-school tutoring program through Higher Academia and have helped the school, family members, friends and neighbors with a wide variety of tasks.
