Students from Polk County FFA participated in the recent North Carolina State FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event at Lee County High School in Sanford.

The CDE was held in cooperation with the Veterinary Technician Program at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford.

The team placed second within the Western North Carolina region of FFA and placed 17th in the state out of 46 teams. Team members include Lily Gosnell (11th grade), Karsyn Huskey (11th), Brooklynn Lewis (11th) and Brooklyn Jones (10th). Ashley Gilbert serves as the team’s advisor.

The Vet Science CDE participants demonstrate their knowledge in all facets of veterinary science from breed and parasite identification to clinical and handling practicums.

The Polk County FFA Chapter worked with recently-retired veterinarian Dr. Bibi Freer to prepare for this competition. Dr. Freer was able to provide insight into veterinary equipment.

The team is sponsored by Hunt Country Equine Mobile Veterinary Service.

“We are extremely grateful for these partnerships to help our students grow in the field of agriculture,” Gilbert said.
