Students in Jeanne Ferran’s seventh grade English Language Arts class at Polk County Middle School are working in pairs to solve a real life mystery!

Students are going to research a real-life mystery of their choice. They will be creating a detective’s case report in order to complete the project. Using logic, evidence and the ability to make deductions, they will be making conclusions about their mystery.

To prepare for this assignment, students visited the PCMS media center for an introduction to Evaluating Websites. Laura Smith, PCMS Media Coordinator, discussed ways to identify hoax websites, inaccurate information and so forth. Smith presented two websites on a particular topic and demonstrated ways to spot the differences between the fake and real website.

Smith also showed students a collection of reliable databases to help them locate the information they need and information was also presented on citing their work.

At a later date, students will come back to the media center to present their project and solve the mystery!
