A number of Polk County elementary school students spent part of summer vacation taking part in summer reading camps.
Students read books, created art projects and took part in educational games to get their summer breaks off to a fun and educational start.
Fourth grade art summer reading camp

Fourth grade students in Michael Darpino’s summer reading camp art classes enjoyed reading Magic Tree House: Mummies in the Morning and then creating their own mummies.
PE summer reading camp

Students in Kenny Hall and Jennifer Morton’s summer reading camp physical education classes are enjoying being physically active while working on their reading skills. Students have taken part in activities including a race to collect letters to build words.
Second grade summer reading camp

Students in Angela Dufford’s second grade summer reading camp class are enjoying using their science, math and reading skills to practice using procedural text.

First grade summer reading camp

Students in Kristy Cox’s first grade summer reading camp class enjoyed the hot weather with a cool treat from the teacher!
Fourth grade summer reading camp

Students in Marsha Davis’ fourth grade summer reading camp are enjoying using Legos to practice their coding skills. Working in small groups, students read their project requirements and build their structures.

Second grade summer reading camp
Students in Michelle Richardson’s second grade summer reading camp class are putting together Spike Legos to build a fairy boat.

The students had to read a story that explained a problem, then gave the students a mission. They then had to work together as a team to design the program in order to solve the problem.
The kids absolutely love it and made a different design each day.



Fifth grade summer reading camp
Students in Ginger Rackley’s fifth grade summer reading camp are reading about real and paper airplanes.

The students are going to create their own paper airplanes to test. Students will time how long their plane can fly and measure the distance it flies. Students are also discussing force and motion while learning about and creating their planes.


Third grade summer reading camp

Students in Nicole Kemp’s third grade summer reading class practiced their reading and math skills through various engaging and hands-on activities.

Students in Michael Darpino’s summer reading art class worked on creating rainforest animals. Students read Magic Tree House: Afternoon on the Amazon to brainstorm ideas for their art projects.











Fifth grade summer reading camp: Charlotte’s Web

Fifth grade students in Michael Darpino’s summer reading camp art class enjoyed reading Charlotte’s Web and worked to create their own webs using watercolors.

First grade summer reading camp: Big Elephants by Shelby Braidich

First grade students in Michael Darpino’s summer reading camp art class read Big Elephant and then painted their own big elephant with watercolors.
Fourth grade summer reading camp

Fourth grade students in Marsha Davis and Karen Prady’s summer reading program enjoyed studying and observing birds during camp. As a culminating activity, students designed and built their own birdhouses.
