Special education teacher Sarah Reid at Tryon Elementary recently adopted two “Fancy Rats” named Cheese and Crackers and launched a round of student projects in the process.
These fancy rodents call Reid’s classroom home. When first grade teachers saw how excited students were about the new residents, they saw an opportunity to implement a STEM project and build on that enthusiasm.
Families sent in supplies to each classroom to build mazes. Students met with Reid prior to building to ask questions about Cheese and Crackers to help them build a maze the rats could utilize successfully.
Students also learned about the history of rats and their intellect.
