Tryon Elementary School recently hosted a military recognition event, Purple Up! Day.
Teachers, students and staff wore purple to show their support for military students and their families.
The school is one of 288 across the state that received designation this academic year as a Purple Star School from the Department of Public Instruction. It marked the second straight year that Tryon Elementary was honored through the initiative, which salutes schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families.
Schools across the state applied for the special designation, and schools deemed as Purple Star Schools are those that completed several required activities, plus an optional activity, aimed at ensuring strong support for students of military families.
