Polk County Schools announced Tuesday that Kevin Weis has been named the new principal at Tryon Elementary School, pending confirmation by the Polk County Board of Education.
Weis, who has served as principal at Sunny View Elementary since 2009, will begin his duties July 1 and will be working with both Tryon Elementary and Sunny View Elementary to facilitate a successful leadership transition. The Board of Education is expected to officially approve Weis’ hiring at its next meeting on June 15.
“After 11 wonderful years as principal of Sunny View, learning and growing as a leader, I am excited for the opportunity to work with the staff and community of Tryon Elementary School,” Weis said. “I appreciate the support and confidence that the Board of Education and Mr. Greene have in me and hope to be a positive force in the lives of those who teach and learn at Tryon Elementary.”
A graduate of Michigan State University, Weis began his career in education in 1989 as an elementary school teacher in Michigan. He first joined Polk County Schools in 1991 as a Title I teacher at Green Creek Elementary and later taught eighth grade social studies and English at Polk Central.
Weis obtained a master’s in School Administration from Gardner-Webb University in 1998 and has spent more than two decades since as a school administrator, working in Lincoln and Henderson counties before returning to Polk County to lead Sunny View.
“We feel fortunate to have Mr. Weis leading Tryon Elementary School as its next principal,” said Polk County Schools Superintendent Aaron Greene. “He has a wealth of elementary experience and has been a successful administrator in Polk County for more than a decade. Mr. Weis is very student-centered and we believe he will be a great fit at Tryon Elementary.”
Greene said the district would immediately begin work to fill the vacancy at Sunny View.
